Date Turnovers 

 
Ingredients
  • 1 cup soft margarine 
  • 1 cup brown sugar 
  • 1 egg 
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla 
  • 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour 
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt 
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder 
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 
  • 1/4 teaspoon mace (optional) 
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk or sour milk 
  • 2 cups rolled oats 
  • homemade or canned date filling 
Method 

Beat the first four ingredients together; then stir in sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk. 
Add the oats and chill until firm enough to roll. 
Roll out on a floured board to 3/8 inch thickness, and cut into circles, 3 - 4 inches in diameter. 
Dampen the edge of each round. 
Dab center with date filling, and fold over. 
Press edges together with a fork. 
Prick the top with a fork. 
Bake on a greased cookie sheet at 375 F 10 minutes or until edges are light brown. 

Yield: 3 dozen 

Date Filling 
 

  • 3 cups dates, cut up 
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water 
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed 
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla 
Method 

Combine all ingredients in saucepan. 
Cook about 10 minutes until mixture takes on the consistency of jam, and cool thoroughly.
