Devil's Food Cake

Ingredients 

  • 1 1/4 cups butter 
  • 4 cups sugar 
  • 5 whole eggs, well beaten 
  • 3 1/2 cups plus 2 tablespoons flour 
  • 1 cup Baker's bitter chocolate 
  • 3 tablespoons hot water 
  • 1 cup buttermilk 
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder 
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in boiling water 
  • 1 cup sweet milk 
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla 
Method 

Cream together 1 cup butter and 2 cups sugar, add eggs and mix well. Add  1/2 cup Baker's bitter chocolate which has been melted in 3 
tablespoons hot water. Add baking soda, 3 1/2 cups flour, buttermilk, baking powder and 
1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix well. Grease and flour round baking pans; make 4-6 layers (if the layers are thin the filling tastes better). Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes or until a wooden pick comes out clean. Mix together 2 cups sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, 1/4 cup sugar, sweet milk, 1/2 cup Baker's bitter sweet chocolate, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Cook in skillet until creamy, stir slightly while cooking. Beat to cool and spread between layers, on top and sides.
